Newborn babies tend to fall asleep almost anywhere at any time, but recognising when your baby needs to go to sleep is still essential. Often, the signals from your newborn baby can be very subtle; here are cues to look out for:
- Closing their fists
- Yawning
- Pulling their ears
- Eyes rolling or blinking
- Little jerks
- Whinging or little moany cries
- Becoming more and more fussy
- Rigid body
When a baby gets to about four months old, sleepy cues are less important than natural nap windows; at this time, a baby’s circadian rhythms (internal body clock) become formed. This is when awake windows are less effective, and natural nap windows become key to getting your baby into a good routine.
Natural nap windows are set times during the day when babies/infants have a lull in their circadian rhythms, are more receptive to sleep, and are likely to sleep for a reasonable amount of time.
